The home team
They are fifteen and under, and they are from here — village schools, church halls, after-school practices on courts they have played on since they were small. They are not a travelling academy squad. They are our daughters, nieces and cousins.
In December, six delegations get on planes to come and play them. For most of the home team this is the first international competition of their lives, and they will play it at home, in front of their own families, on their own floor. That does not happen twice.
Allen Allen coaches and mentors them — teaching the game, and alongside it the discipline, composure and belief that they carry long after the last whistle.
